My name is Nicole Dominique Le Maire, I am the owner of Human Resources Global Ltd. and New To HR. I am also working in collaboration on various other international projects. Currently I am co-authoring the book: The Female Leader, Empowerment, Confidence and Passion to be published on the 28th of April 2013.
I wanted to start my businesses for various reasons.
Firstly, I started my company for me! I wanted to be the ruler of my own success, reputation and financial situation. The feeling to be accountable for my own success and progress are very exciting and keep me focused and motivation to grow.
Secondly, I created my business for my clients. I found that my clients and specifically their small organizations were yearning for HR services with a more personal, customized approach.
The aim of my role is to provide necessary support, guidance and development opportunities in Human Resources, Leadership, and Talent Management. Over the last number of years, I have provided global HR services and training. I have completed most of the industry-leading courses and even trained on several of them. Recently, I was accepted onto the Executive Board of the HRIS Research Network.
I have a varied routine that really depends on the project. I could be working behind the computer from my home office to meeting a client onsite in another country, to travelling the world to speak at conferences, to holding webinars. My team is based all around the world and therefore I have a varied work pattern - which allows me for some flexibility as well.
When I started out in HR, I was asked by the company to move forward in the operational side of the business. Although likely I would have started my businesses as well - I may have had a bit of a different view of people from the operational side, so I have always tried to keep that focus with me.
Are there any job opportunities or careers I would have liked to explore? No, I believe I have done everything from a career perspective that I would have wanted under a boss. Done that got the tshirt view really. However if you talk from an entrepreneurial side - there are lots of things that I would like to explore, startup and collaborate on. The world is my entrepreneurial oyster!
Deciding to move forward and leave the corporate world behind me, I am a little different than most people and love taking risks. Many business skills can be learned through courses and classes and reading books, but I believe that you should do what you are passionate about. Once you have found your passion, learn everything there is to know about it. Live it, feel it, sleep it, eat it.
As for success in my current role..............This is difficult as I do not really talk about how much I have achieved. But I believe you need to be confident, first and foremost. Your team relies on you, so even if you have to fake it till you make it, you have to portray confidence. Secondly, you need to be inspiring and motivational. There will be times when things don’t go as planned and you have to lift them up, even when you’re shaking in your boots. Then of course, you need to be receptive, open to new ideas and inspire confidence in your team.
We are taught to treat people the way we want to be treated. So when it comes to running my business, I ask myself how I want businesses to treat me and obviously, the answer is with experience, skill, professionalism and integrity. In all my dealings, I do my best to portray the skills I have mastered, use my experience to benefit my clients, and conduct my business with professional integrity that is really my key to success!
I currently am doing what I love – guiding and assisting people with their careers and helping start-up businesses with HR. This however means that my life/work/start-up businesses all get mixed up most of the time, which is great as well. I don’t want to always monitor everything that’s going on everywhere. Some tasks are time sensitive and critical. My team has started outsourcing some of the tasks that can be done in order to allow us to focus on our clients more.
Women make great business people, but there’s more to thriving as a woman than just business, which is why it is so important to find your passion.
have learned that women really struggle to be themselves in business. It’s difficult, as we are generally softer beings: nurturing and emotion come to us naturally, but we feel we need to hide our feelings or face being ridiculed. Emotions don’t make us weak, but skill makes us strong. It is what I emphasise in my co-authored book and the chapter 'Being'. Knowing who you are, how to connect and be someone people can look to for help is the key to success. Don’t ask for permission to be successful. It is all about what moves and inspires you.
Life is not just easy all the time. Things will go wrong and you will have to deal with difficult co-workers and clients from time to time. However, if you love your job, it will be much easier to be inspired to want to deal with it, instead of wanting to throw in the towel.
Consider the reasons why you are 'unfulfilled'. Do you know what you’d rather be doing? If so, follow these steps:
1. Speak to people in the desired industry about your dream job.
2. Start building on the transferrable skills you already have.
3. Get some experience by finding a weekend job or taking some courses. If you don’t know where to start, contact us, as we can help guide you.
Starting and running your own business gives you the keys to take control of your life and make a difference, create your own income, be the person that you want to be, follow a path that allows you to create the difference that you want in the world. It is not always easy, and it takes a lot of hard work (truly hard work!); or that there will not be times where you will question what you are doing or why you are doing it but when you find what’s right for you, there is nothing more rewarding. The other great thing about starting your own business is that you can do it on your terms.
I’d like to think of myself as a citizen of the world. This has allowed me to see many beautiful places, and meet fantastic people in the process.
I believe that everyone can find a position and make it into their own by establishing what they want out of life and their careers. The days of finishing school, attending university and working for 50+ years in the first job you find, are over. I believe that if I can contribute to that by supporting people, I will have my legacy.
Thank you for taking the time to read my career adventures, I would like to leave you with this thought....."If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading". - Lao Tzu
